Interventional radiology has been described as the surgery of the new millennium. It is a medical sub-specialty of radiology utilizing minimally-invasive image-guided procedures to diagnose and treat diseases in nearly every organ system. The concept behind interventional radiology is to diagnose and treat patients using the least invasive techniques currently available in order to minimize risk to the patient and improve health outcomes. These procedures have less risk, less pain and less recovery time in comparison to open surgery.
UFE (Uterine Fibroid Embolization)
An alternative to hysterectomy used to treat fibroid tumors of the uterus
which can cause heavy menstrual bleeding, pain, and pressure on the bladder
or bowel. UFE uses a form of real-time x-ray called fluoroscopy to guide
the delivery of embolic agents to the uterus and fibroids. These agents
block the arteries that provide blood to the fibroids and cause them to
shrink. Studies have shown that nearly 90 percent of women who undergo
UFE experience significant or complete resolution of their fibroid-related symptoms.
